Arlette van Maas de Bie is founder/partner of Van Maas de Bie, Advocatuur Mediation Coaching.
Arlette specializes in international divorces and family issues.
She advises about the international jurisdiction of the court and the applicable law on the divorce, the matrimonial property regime, the division of pension rights after divorce, cross-border custody and contact arrangements as well as international alimony questions. Furthermore she takes care of the execution of a Dutch court decision abroad and vice versa a foreign court decision is executed in the Netherlands.
Furthermore Arlette engages in international decent questions, surrogacy, recognition of children, determination of paternity, international adoptions and obtaining of the Dutch nationality.
The clientele of Arlette is versatile. With more than 20 years of experience as a lawyer and mediator Arlette knows that a mutual arrangement out of court has more to offer than a court procedure. In international procedures that is even more so. Court procedures tend to be very costly and take ages. Arlette’s added value is that with her knowledge of international law and conflict management she prevents the parties falling into the different kind of traps and guide them to optimal juridical solid solutions.
Individual coaching is often part of the mediation process. The cultural differences between people play an important role, especially in international cases. It also determines how people handle conflicts and communicate with each other (or rather not communicate). By recognizing this, people learn talking to each other instead of not hearing what the other really means. When listening to react changes into listening to understand, real contact comes to life. It opens doors for solutions.
At divorces it plays a part that over the years spouses developed certain patterns of communication. These patterns together with the sadness and frustrations about the divorce make that negotiations often stuck. To create another mindset, in an individual coaching session Arlette helps to break through worn-out patterns and give the mourning process a place. That helps to brighten the way to build new bridges and work constructively on a new future and new reality for both parts.
Focus on the positive, the solution and the future, facilitate changes in desired direction. Therefore, focus on solution-oriented talk rather than on problem-oriented talk.

Arlette van Maas de Bie studied Law at the Law Faculty of the University Leyden (Netherlands) and Osnabrück (Germany). After her studies she was a university lecturer in private international law for many years. She obtained her doctorate on a German thesis about international divorces and its consequences.
Since September 19988 Arlette works as a lawyer with an international legal practice. First she worked with Banning Van Kemenade en Holland Advocaten (the later Holland Van Gijzen Advocaten en Notarissen), then she was one of the founding partners of VMBS Advocaten. Subsequently she served as a deputy judge in an Appeal Court for two years.
Arlette followed her mediation training at Dialogue and her Coaching training at Move a Mountain. In her practice she works closely with other lawyers, mediators, coaches, therapists, special KIES-coaches for children in divorce situations, tax and pension experts.
Arlette is regularly called in by fellow lawyers as an expert for advice or legal/second opinions in the field of private international law. She is capable to fathom the most complicated matter, to make it understandable and resolve them.
As a specialist in the field of private international law and her rich practical experience Arlette is often asked as a teacher. She has participated in various courses, such as the postgraduate specialization course Family Law of VFAS/IMFO, OSR, AvdR, Nemesis Opleidingen, Professional training of lawyers and School voor Mediation.
